As a small businesses owner, you will no doubt be familiar with the term ‘Imposter Sydrome’.
In fact, you don’t have to be a small business owner, to have had the pleasure.
But fortune favours the brave.
And it is this we must remember.
We will all have had those times when the ‘voice’ of judgement has stalked us and questioned our authority. ‘Who do we think we are in trying to guide others?’ and ‘what do we know’?
The interesting thing about this is that, both in truth and in real life, it is rare that someone will actually say any of these things.
But we still have to go through it nevertheless. I often think it is a little journey that we go through in order to strengthen our resolve!
As a Lifestyle Blogger with my own personal blog, I published my first post almost two years ago and I have been publishing posts ever since. I cannot tell you how long it took me to get started but once I did, I was elated. It wasn’t even my job at the time – merely something I had a yearning to do.
I was with someone when I published my first post – someone to hold my hand and I was very grateful to have had the support of an ‘expert’.
And guess what – nothing terrible happened. Quite the opposite. I received lots of positive feedback and well wishes. I had made my start.
As we know from being business owners, it is making the start that is often the hardest.
And I continue to publish posts and they continue to be well received. Don’t get me wrong – you do of course have to work very hard to build an audience and get people engaging with your content. There will also be times when no-one reads what you have said. Nothing wrong with it – it just hasn’t hit the mark this time. I can learn from that.
As a Lifestyle Blogger, I am well aware that within my content there are going to be things that others may disagree with or don’t like or there will be circumstances that they would have handled differently. I will raise subjects that may cause difference of opinion – healthy debate – that is the very nature of engagement and celebrating difference. None of that means that what I have said is wrong though and neither is my reader.
It is rare for people to be rude or insulting. If they are, then I move swiftly on in the same way that I would in a real life situation.
I always remember this when publishing my business posts. Because the same rules apply. And yes, of course I get the voice that asks ‘what do you know?’ when I write about business blogging. ‘Is it too basic?’, ‘am I trying to educate people in the art of sucking eggs?’ Or ‘are there others that know more than me?’
The truth is that yes there are and that, yes there will continue to be. But that is why they have their target market and I have mine.
In the same way that when you talk about your business, you know who your target market is. It is no different with your business blog.
It is through being consistent that you will resonate with the audience or client that is for you.
Your words, your style and your knowledge will hit the mark with the right person.
Remember your target market. You are writing for them.
You aren’t looking to engage the masses and nor should you waste your time in doing so.
One of the most important things that I have learned through my Lifestyle Blog is to have someone in mind to whom you are addressing your words. And guess what?
You do know your stuff. You know it inside out. There are people that are interested in what you have to share. And that is why you have a business. People are already using your services.
If you take anything away from this piece, please let it be it that.
I know from constantly engaging with my target market what their needs are and how I can help them. That in turn helps me to address them through my blog posts.
It also helps me to recognise that, yes there will be others doing the same thing that know more than me. That there will also be others that are running far more successful blogs. That is wonderful for me. We can all learn from each other. We all do things differently.
But in the meantime, I continue to address those that I know to be ‘my target market’ because we are all at different stages of the journey.
And because we are also all small businesses, I know that there is always someone to whom I can make a referral. Because the chances are I may have used them myself.
Isn’t that what it’s all about after all?
This applies to your business too.
Whatever area of business you are in, you are the ‘Expert’ in that field.
Your business blog is an extension of your business and your place to share that knowledge.
And someone is waiting to hear what you have to say.
Make it easy for them. Be their solution.
